Thames River Detachment – Marine Corps League History

The Thames River Detachment of the Marine Corps League has a proud and storied history of service, commitment, and community involvement, embodying the values of honor, courage, and commitment that define the Marine Corps. Located in Southeastern Connecticut, along the Thames River, the detachment has long served as a hub for Marines and Marine supporters in the region, fostering camaraderie and providing vital support to veterans, their families, and the local community.

Founding and Early Years

The Thames River Detachment was established in 2008 and chartered by the Marine Corps League in 2009, by a group of dedicated Marine Corps veterans who sought to continue the bonds of brotherhood formed during their service. The detachment was chartered under the Marine Corps League, an organization founded in 1923 by Major General John A. Lejeune, with the mission to promote the interests of the Marine Corps, preserve its traditions, and serve the Marine Corps family.

In its early years, the detachment was small but active, with a core group of Marine veterans who organized events, participated in community service, and supported fellow veterans through advocacy and assistance. Their commitment to helping local veterans transition to civilian life and their involvement in patriotic events quickly made the Thames River Detachment a respected presence in the community.

Growth and Expansion

Over the decades, the Thames River Detachment grew in both membership and impact. As more Marines and veterans joined the ranks, the detachment expanded its activities to include a wider array of programs and services, such as:

  • Veteran Support Services: Assisting local Marines and veterans in accessing VA benefits, healthcare, housing, and employment opportunities.
  • Community Outreach: Hosting and participating in community service projects, parades, patriotic ceremonies, and events that honor veterans and active-duty military personnel.
  • Youth Programs: Supporting the development of future leaders by sponsoring youth leadership programs such as the Young Marines and providing scholarships to the children of Marines and veterans.

Through these efforts, the detachment became an integral part of the southeastern Connecticut community, known for its dedication to veterans and its active role in preserving the Marine Corps legacy.

Supporting Marines Through Generations

Throughout its history, the Thames River Detachment has stood by Marines and their families through the changing landscape of American military engagements. From supporting veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, to assisting those who served in Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan, the detachment has been a constant source of strength and solidarity for generations of Marines.

As the nature of warfare evolved, so did the detachment’s mission. It expanded its services to address the unique challenges faced by modern-day veterans, such as mental health issues, PTSD, and reintegration into civilian life. The Thames River Detachment has partnered with local and national organizations to provide access to mental health resources, counseling, and support for veterans in crisis.
