On September 12, 1942<\/strong>, United States Marines braced themselves for one of the fiercest engagements in the Pacific Theater of World War II: the Battle of Edson’s Ridge<\/strong>, also known as Bloody Ridge<\/strong>, during the Guadalcanal Campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Battle of Guadalcanal, which began in August 1942 and lasted until February 1943, was a pivotal moment in the Pacific War. Edson’s Raiders were tasked with defending a critical ridge just south of Henderson Field, a position that the Japanese recognized as key to retaking the airfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of two grueling nights<\/strong>, from September 12-14, the Marines fought off repeated assaults by a much larger Japanese force. Japanese Major General Kiyotake Kawaguchi<\/strong> launched a determined attack with over 3,000 troops<\/strong>, attempting to overrun the Marines’ defensive positions. The fighting was intense, with Marines defending against waves of attackers in hand-to-hand combat, artillery bombardments, and close-range firefights. Despite the overwhelming odds, the Marines held firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edson\u2019s leadership and the fierce resistance of his men became legendary. As the Japanese forces attempted to breach the ridge, Edson continuously moved among his men, directing fire, rallying them, and personally engaging in combat. His actions earned him the Medal of Honor<\/strong>, and the ridge later became known as Edson\u2019s Ridge<\/strong> in honor of his valiant leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
